Nimesulide mechanism of action

Nimesulide is a prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with a multifactorial mode of action, characterized by a fast onset of analgesic activity.It must be used under supervision by a doctor in accordance with the approved indications and in compliance with the recommendations included in the Summary of Product Characteristics.

In 1980 the original nimesulide molecule was in-licensed by Helsinn Healthcare, a pharmaceutical company based in Switzerland. In 1985 it was first launched in Italy by Helsinn’s local licensees under the brand names Aulin and Mesulid. 

Helsinn manufactures the original Nimesulide active ingredient and finished products in full compliance with the current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) guidelines in its plants in Switzerland and Ireland.

Nimesulide drug was launched in Italy for the first time as Aulin and Mesulid in 1985 and is presently available in more than 50 countries worldwide with different trademarks.

Nimesuilde is a pain killer NSAIDs drug is the best prescribed drug for treatment of acute pain, Primary dysmennorhea and also to treat degenerative joint disease.


Its multifactorial mode of action gives it a unique and broad action on inflammatory processes.
It has superior gastrointestinal safety as compared to other NSAIDs. It is an analgesic and antipyretic in action, other than its anti inflammatory action.
As for other NSAIDs the use of Nimesulide is preffered for the shortest duration necessary to control symptoms in patients with acute pain or primary dysmenorrhoea. The efficacy of Nimesulide was consistently superior to placebo with its particularly rapid onset action.
